What Is Jellyfish Parenting? Pros And Cons

January 31, 2023 by Shanta Rath Leave a Comment

Quite often, we find moms raising their children leniently. They appear to have a very flexible approach toward their kid’s activities and seldom get irritated with them. Such parents are known as jellyfish parents. According to social media trends, jellyfish parenting is hugely popular and is striving for the top parenting style.

What is jellyfish parenting?

Jellyfish parenting is quite permissive and places few rules on kids. Jellyfish parents are generally laid back and have a relaxed approach to raising their kids. Often, parents allow their kids to have their way and hardly schedule their kid’s activities. They are quite indifferent to the consequences when their kids refuse to follow the rules.

Most of the time, the focus of jellyfish parents is on what their child needs and take little control of their kid’s activities. They provide few clear expectations for their kids. For instance, you may insist on taking your kid some swimming lessons, but your kid may be having a meltdown when he sees the pool and may refuse to be coached by a trainer. As a jellyfish parent, you may tune in to your child’s wish, unlike an authoritative parent, and allow your kid to have his way.

Brightside of a jellyfish parent

Jellyfish parents show high warmth and communication and are friendly to their kids. Children feel comfortable confiding their secrets to their moms. Jellyfish parents support their kids during such moments and make them feel emotionally secure.

Kids of jellyfish moms are more confident and try to do everything that they know. They become independent quite early and are quick to take their own decisions.

As jellyfish moms are quite liberal, kids are often self-driven and motivated. They love to explore activities and pursue hobbies that interest them. Kids often experience deep satisfaction and happiness in whatever they do.

The downside of a jellyfish parent

However, this sort of parenting also has some disadvantages. Your kid may fall into bad company due to the absence of parental influence. Your kid may lose his focus and go astray. It can have problematic consequences and adversely affect your child’s well-being.

Kids are also less inclined to follow any rules and have less self-regulation. They may also lack social responsibility and may also suffer from high anxiety as they handle problems on their own. For instance, your kid may go out to a party with his friends, but he may not inform you if he is late. It is also possible that he may have heated arguments with his friends and may be quite tensed up in easing the situation.

Finding out the right balance

Jellyfish parenting

Jellyfish moms can help to provide a positive stress-free environment for their kids. They can lay down consistent rules, regular routines, and a safe space for different activities for their kids. But if your child is resisting a schedule, you can listen to what your child wants to do and allow him to do it.

For instance, if your child refuses to go to drawing or painting classes, as a jellyfish parent, you can permit him to do that. But if your kid is insisting on taking his piano or guitar lessons, you can accept his wishes. It will help your kid to have an interest in the activity as well as go a long way in building his self-confidence.

As a jellyfish parent, you can also have regular schedules for mealtimes and bedtimes. It will help your child to be disciplined and carry out daily routines quite efficiently. So, as your kid grows, he would be able to accomplish all his tasks without any parental influence.

You can also help your child to create a weekly or daily calendar to remind him of his activities. There are several computer apps and Home Routines available for your child. It can help your kid to remind him of important social events in school, taking badminton lessons, or going to martial art classes during the week.

Your kid can also note down important events in the family that he has to attend like visiting his grandma during the weekends or going to the park with his cousins. It will help him to not miss any of these occasions.

Conclusion

They are small steps but as a jellyfish parent, you can help your kid to be resourceful and capable. Your kid will be able to handle all his tasks with ease and be successful in whatever path he chooses!
