Teaching Cycling Safety to Children

Riding a bike is one of those standout childhood memories with parents as well as kids enjoying special moments while exploring on two wheels! Even with technology, riding a bike is an activity that your kids can keep growing with, or, for little ones, they might start with training wheels and getting ready for a two-wheeler.

Safety on a bike is one of the main concerns for parents and it’s understandable: after all, while bikes offer fun and freedom, they’re a developmental milestone as your child becomes more independent. Although cycling is tied to wellbeing it’s still an activity that you should properly prepare your child or children for especially when it comes to safety, with data showing that properly-fitted helmets reducing the risk of serious head injury by at least 45%. Additionally  Angela Lumba-Brown, MD says, “Modelling safe bicycle practices with your child when riding bikes together as a family is an important way of supervising and demonstrating injury-preventing habits. In fact, 90% of children are more likely to wear their helmets when their parents consistently do so as well.”

Important areas to consider for your child are covered in this informative infographic, Teaching Cycling Safety to Children. The team at Hussey Fraser Solicitors developed this to help families with all the key safety areas and pointers they need for kids to start cycling. This graphic provides key tips about kids cycling for parents showing their kids and the family’s building cycling confidence, plus there’s also essential safety advice for reading traffic and getting ready for overall road safety.

Cycling is a life skill that your child will be able to enjoy from when they’re small through to adulthood whether for fun, transport, fitness, travel, or all of the above! Remember that your child’s abilities will increase the more they cycle; however, keep them reminded of staying observant and maintaining safe practices — even if they’re just pedaling around your neighborhood.
