Nipple Piercing Jewelry in 2022 and Breastfeeding : What New Mothers Should Know

Many women have nipple piercings before they become mothers and once they know they are pregnant are often in doubt what to do with them. Nipple piercings look glamorous and gives you a great feel. There is no need to discard them once you enter motherhood. You might be concerned if nipple piercings would affect breastfeeding. Yes, it is best to remove the piercings when you are breastfeeding but once your child is past that age, you can go back to wearing your jewelry again. But there are also women who wear nipple jewelry after every breastfeeding session and do so without any issues.

There are three different types of nipple piercings- vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. If you want to go for the extreme look, you can try an altogether new look by adding different types of nipple piercings all into one.

Why Horizontal Piercing is Preferred

While it is recommended not to use them while breastfeeding there are many women who go on to breastfeed successfully with pierced nipples, taking extra precautions regarding their jewelry, and the use of different breastfeeding positions to minimize and leaking and faster flow of milk to the baby. If you are one of them, then we would recommend horizontal piercings. Do not try to go for the X-shaped piercings or the vertical piercings if you have planned to take up the role of motherhood.

The answer lies in the way we hold our babies for feeding. Usually, a baby is fed in a horizontal position and if the jewelry is also worn in the same manner, it will not disturb the baby’s feeding behavior. However, if you arrange it vertically or diagonally, it can injure your baby’s soft tissue inside the mouth.  As a word of caution, remove your jewelry from your nipples before feeding the baby.

You need to make sure your nipples have already healed before you start breastfeeding. If you do choose to reinsert your nipple jewelry after each breastfeeding session, take extra precautions such as washing your hands with soap and water before removing and reinserting your jewelry. Also do not forget to sterilize your ring or stud, and clean the area around your piercing to remove dead skin cells and old discharge. If you are concerned and have additional queries, you should always consult your doctor or ask a Lactation Consultant to ensure that what you are doing is safe for your baby.

Some Good Options

And if you are mother who are past the breastfeeding stage some good options for 2022 are circular barbells, stone embedded rings, triangles set in gold or silver, and small bead-shaped jewelry. Try butterfly as a new shape and match the size of the butterfly with your nipple shape. These designs have caught fire recently and can add up to your beauty. Also, if you are wearing jewelry when breastfeeding, you can wear ring-shaped nipple piercing jewelry. They won’t disturb the flow of the milk in any way.

Hope you got some information about nipple piercings and breastfeeding. As a mother, your baby’s safety comes first, and you are the best person to think about it.
