Kids learn much better when learning becomes enjoyable for them. Jolly Phonics is a great way to help students recognize and learn every sound in English. This learning technique uses an action, a song, or a storyline to introduce all letters to students.

Jolly Phonics is an enjoyable program that helps develop students’ sensory skills. This program focuses on developing the multi-sensory skills of the learner. So, a learner can succeed easily in reading and writing.

The learning program has several benefits for small kids. It helps students crack the code to learn English in a much better way.

Here are a few benefits that the Jolly Phonics program delivers to learners.

Benefits Of Jolly Phonics

  • Students who learn using this technique can develop better English reading and writing skills.
  • Since there is a use of an action or a storyline to help students recognize the sounds, their imaginative skills enhance.
  • Students can become confident in their English reading and writing skills.
  • This program does not require the school to shun its other literacy programs. Jolly Phonics can complement the already existing literacy programs.
  • It helps build a strong foundation for students in reading and writing English.
  • In addition, they also develop multiple sensory skills. Also, it aids in their cognitive skill development.

So, Jolly Phonics is a great systematic Phonics program that enables a student to read and write confidently. A student can easily recognize sounds and words when he sits through this program.

There are five basic skills on which a tutor must focus while teaching students with this technique. Let’s discuss them.

5 Main Skills Emphasized In Jolly Phonics

Jolly phonics

Various studies have signalled that students who sit through the Jolly Phonics program develop a mindset ahead of their age. For instance, a student tutored with the Jolly Phonics program develops reading skills twelve months ahead of their current age.

It happens because Jolly Phonics focuses on students’ 5 main skill development.

a.Learning The Letter Sounds

This program focuses on tutoring the 42 English letter sounds to students. Usually, all 42 sounds get classified into a group of 7. These sounds are then written in individual letters. However, some sounds might be represented with two letters.

Some letter groups can have two different sounds. For instance, ‘th’ can sound like ‘that’ or ‘three’. Thus, a tutor uses a picture to help students distinguish between the two.

Sometimes, the tutor might also use an action to represent a sound.

A great way to teach students is, to begin with, letter sounds. It will help a student in blending words and recognize them.

b. Learning Letter Formation

Jolly Phonics helps a student with letter formation at an early age. With this program, a student learns proper letter formation. Usually, the tutors begin by teaching them the basic shape of the letter c. It helps them build and recognize several other letters, such as d.

While teaching students letter formation, a tutor must ensure that a student learns to hold a pencil properly. The grip should be perfect. In addition, the strokes that a student gives with his pencil are in an anti-clockwise direction.

c.Blending

Students learn how to blend sounds when the tutor speaks out individual sounds of a word. Then, students learn to put these sounds together to build the word. So, a seamless blending of sound for students becomes possible.

A tutor must ensure that he keeps in mind that every student might take a different time to process the sounds. Some students can take an extended time to hear the words.

d.Identifying Sounds

Tutors teach students to spell a word after listening to the sounds present in each word. It makes it simple for students to spell tough words because they can easily recognize the sounds. You can even initiate this skill-building process by engaging them in games such as I-Spy.

Or, another way to help them identify the sounds is to tap on every sound. For example, you can start with any three-letter word and tap with the sound of every letter.

e.Spell Tough Words

A student can learn tough words with several tricks. You can break these words into sounds. Or you can also have a student practice writing the word by breaking it into sounds.

Conclusion

The Jolly Phonics program is a great way to help a student learn sounds. With this technique, a student can easily analyze the sounds. Also, it offers little learners a great way to learn English words. When reading and writing become easy, a student’s confidence soars high.

Jolly Phonics is a very routine practice in several kindergarten schools. A great thing about implementing this program is that it works well with other literacy programs. You do not need to eliminate any other program to give space to Jolly Phonics in a child’s learning curriculum.

Besides, this program is easy to get along with for children. You can contribute significantly to the sensory skills development of a child by using this program.
