7 Ways to Make Your Backyard Safe Place for Kids

July 18, 2021 by Laura Stace 3 Comments

Moving into your new home is indeed an exciting experience, especially when you have a spacious backyard where kids can run & play. However, as a responsible parent, you want to make sure that the backyard is safe for the kids to roam around & play without worrying about injuring themselves.

Safety is one major concern around the house, particularly the backyard; this is because children are exposed to various elements when they are outside the house. Here are seven things you can do to ensure their safety.

Build a fence

1. Build a Fence

If you already do not have one, put a fence in your backyard. By doing this, you don’t have to worry about your kids running outside the boundary of your home or wild animals and strangers coming into your backyard.

This will assure you as parents knowing that the backyard is a safe space to play for your kids without any intrusion from outside.

Children like playing with water, so if you have a pool, you will have to install an additional fence or get a cover to prevent kids from going straight into the pool.

2. Do Ground Maintenance Regularly

The next thing to do is to maintain the yard. Keep the grass low so that everything is visible, and you can see any animals such as snakes crawling into the yard easily.

Check for any poisonous plants and get rid of them as soon as you notice them. If you prefer a significant amount of greenery in your yard, trim the plants regularly. Don’t forget to clear the walkway or play area from any unnecessary plants.

Trees can also be a hazard to children because of their falling branches. Contact a tree removal team because they can help you remove it safely and responsibly.

Moreover, make sure there’s no sharp object on the ground that can cause injury as the kids tend to run around. You will need to ensure that the backyard is clean and clear so that it does not attract any snakes and other wild animals.

3. Hide All Tools

Children are curious individuals, and they are easily attracted to tools and gadgets. It’s wise to keep all the sharp tools, rope, and chemicals in a secured cabinet or a storeroom away from their sight and reach.

Their explorative nature can at times push them to do unexpected things, and this includes climbing on cabinets or opening a door. Make sure the lock is secured when keeping the tools and chemicals away.

4. Minimize Furniture

If possible, try to keep your backyard furniture minimal. Aside from making it easier for you to maintain, it also helps the kids to play around without having to stumble on the furniture. Chairs, for example, can be used to climb hard-to-reach areas, and this is a risk for potential falls.

5. Constantly Remind Them of the Ground Rules

Telling your kids the rules before they go out and play every single time is pertinent. Teaching them early about safety reduces the risk at home and will keep them away from injury.

The best way to teach them, especially for younger children, is repetition. Constantly remind them before they go out and play. Soon they will know their boundary, and this will keep them from getting into an accident.

6. Caution with Barbequing to Keep your Backyard Safe for Kids

The backyard is a popular spot for barbeque sessions, and we all love it. Nonetheless, always be cautious with grilling when there are kids around.

Avoid grilling near the children’s play area. Set a no-children-allowed area, and explain it to them.

Once the party is done, it would be good to store all the barbeque tools aside where it’s hard for the kids to reach. All the sharp barbeque tools can be hazardous when the kids play or fall on them.

7. Adult Supervision

This is something we all know, yet we tend to relax when we think it’s our backyard. We might feel that as everything is safe, we can leave the kids alone at times. However, young children can’t understand dangerous situations. This is why it is always wise to have at least one adult supervise the kids while playing. The adult can help monitor playtime and remind them to take a break and drink their water.

When an accident happens during the play, the adult can respond immediately. It is also a significant time for parents to bond with their kids.

Conclusion

Your backyard should not be neglected or overlooked, and safety should be a priority for every homeowner who owns a backyard. Putting up a fence, supervising play, keeping all the tools away from their reach, and reducing furniture are easy ways to improve safety.

However, regular maintenance of the backyard is necessary to reduce the risk of injury among the children. Trimming the grass and cutting down tree branches, or even removing a dead tree is necessary, but this will require some professional help.

Ensuring backyard safety can be tiresome but worth the effort knowing that your kids are safe and protected from potential harm.
