7 Mental Health Challenges of Single Motherhood

December 9, 2025 by Valary Edith Leave a Comment

Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed – Nishan Panwar.

As a single mother, raising my son alone is both a remarkable journey and a significant mental health challenge. I vividly remember a night, after work and school duties, when my son fell ill. Juggling dinner and caring for him, the weight of solo responsibility felt immense. Yet these very moments revealed strengths I never realized and underscored the need for effective mental health strategies. Facing the pressures of nurturing a child, managing finances, and coping with the mental impact of single motherhood, I recognized that preserving my well-being is not only vital for me but essential for my son’s future.

Research shows that single moms often face mental health challenges, primarily due to the financial burdens of being a sole provider. Below are seven major mental health challenges single mothers encounter, along with strategies that have helped me and can support others, to underline the ongoing message: maintaining mental health is essential for both mother and child.

1. Raising the kids alone

Single mothers often face the challenges of parenting their child alone, such as instilling discipline and communicating effectively with their child. In my case, my biggest issue was helping my son to transition into manhood. Thanks to technology and online classes, raising my boy has been a breeze for me. Lone moms can also read books and attend workshops to improve their parenting skills.

2. Stigmatization and Prejudice

Single moms may encounter prejudice and stigma from the community, leading to anxiety, misery, and personality disorders. They can seek help or support from friends and relatives to pull through this. Those who are financially stable can also seek legal assistance if they face intimidation and unfairness from society.

3. Financial Strains

Financial problems often arise when single mothers are the sole breadwinners of their families. Most of them are usually jobless or employed but paid low-income wages that aren’t enough to feed their families. To manage the stress, lone moms can seek help from the government to request funds to start small businesses such as freelance writing, catering, tailoring, or offering virtual assistance services. They can also try to seek child support or apply for grants. Single mothers should learn to budget wisely, avoid impulse buying, and seek ways to save money.

4. Psychological Agony

Single moms find themselves in their situation due to early separation caused by the death of a partner or divorce. This can be traumatic for both the mother and the child. Mental breakdowns may strike them as they try to adapt to the new adjustment that occurs in their lives. In such cases, therapy and counseling for lone moms can be a lifesaver for them. They can also practice self-care by getting sufficient sleep, eating healthy foods, and keeping fit.

5. Naturing A Child or Children with Special Needs

Being a single mom to a child with special needs is usually an uphill struggle. The constant emotional, physical, and financial constraints of caring for a child with special needs can lead to early depression. Lone moms may also feel lonely, unsupported, and overburdened by the liability of caring for their children. Single moms should seek reinforcement and measures to help them deal with the mental challenges of nurturing kids with physical disabilities. This can be achieved by them seeking counseling or joining support groups that help moms in a similar position. Moms of special needs kids is an online support group that can be a great help to those who don’t have support groups in their community.

6. Dating

Starting a new dating journey as a single mother is usually not a walk in the park due to unavoidable circumstances. Some of the challenges include;

  • Navigating new relationships while balancing parenting responsibilities, moms should balance between enjoying their new dating lives and being responsible parents to their kids.
  • Emotional turmoil from past relationships: A single mother should ensure that she does not carry past mistakes or burdens to her current romance.
  • Frequent communication with the ex. This is normally brought about by co-parenting, which always interferes with the new relationship. To prevent mishaps, it is usually advisable to set boundaries, and the current partner should be aware of the co-parenting situation.
  • Introducing the child to the new partner and the child’s acceptance of the relationship. Single moms should take time to introduce new partners to their children. They should also be able to study their reactions when communicating with them about the new affair.

7. Inadequate Time for Self-care

Parenting requires spending a lot of time with our kids as we nurture them. This can be easily achieved if both parents are present in a child’s life. Being a loving mother, a sole provider, and finding time for self-care might be a challenge for single moms. This usually results in neglect of mental and physical health. They should learn to prioritize their self-care by taking the kids to their grandparents or daycare and allowing them to have some free time, relax, enjoy their hobbies, exercise, or join yoga classes. These will help manage stress and improve mental well-being.

Single mothers should always remember that they are not alone, they are doing an amazing job, and mental health challenges can be overcome. This can be achieved by joining support groups that help other single moms and seeking help from family and friends whenever needed.
